Early
growth
- · Founded by the Gauls about 600 BC
- · Always been one of the most powerful cities since the Roman empire
- · In 1045 Milan became a commune with its own governmental structures
- · It lived a period of economic florescence in 1176 after the Battle of Legnano.
- · The problem at the time was the ongoing conflict between different rich families such as the Torriani and the Visconti.
- · In 1499 the duchy of Milan became property of France and it was reconquered in 1500 by Ludovico Sorza.

The city fell then into the hands of Philp
II of Spain until 1706.

In 1630 the novel I promessi sposi by Alessandro Manzoni was published

In 1706 the city passed from Spanish to Austrian
rule

Despite the Austrian censorship Milan was positively
affected by the French Revolution

In 1805 Milan became the capital of the
new kingdom of Italy until 1814

In the next decades the city was influenced
by the positive current of the Risorgimento

Thanks to the Cinque giornate the people of Milan rose up against the Austrian
government.

Unluckily the Austrians took control back
later on

The Battle of Magenta liberated Milan in
1859

After that Milan became where most of the revolutionary
movements and reforms took place.

In 1861 Italy became a proper country on its
own

20th century
- · World War I destroyed Milan just like it did with many other cities
- · Around 1920 a great period of instability began as workers started protesting and a strong opposition to socialism was born
- · Fascism started to gain support from the Milanese people
- · The Germans occupied Milan after World War II until the Allies arrived in 1945
- · Mussolini’s was killed the same year
- · Politics was then controlled by the Christian democrats
- · 1968 was a fundmental year for the Italian student movement and women’s role in society
- · In 1970 terrorism and economic depression was all people were talking about
- · Until another economic boom came in the 1980s
- · 1992 was the year of corruption
· It is a fully developed city under several aspects
