Product #1: “101 cose da fare a Milano almeno una volta nella vita”, 101 things to do in Milan at least once in your life
picture taken by me of my own travel guide |
The topics it talks about are a lot and also quite interesting but they are all thing that people who live in Milan would do not tourists, and not knowing anything about Milan is definitely not an advantage because there are pretty straight references to districts and streets which you can't find without a map if you are a tourist (a map is not included in the book).
My conclusion is that this is the kind of book you would read for your own pleasure either if you leave in Milan and are curios about knowing more or if you are the kind of tourist that has been in Milan before and is now interested in discovering new places and new things to do.
DIFFERENT ASPECTS:
Aesthetics: The cover is quite appealing: there is a huge title and a really nice drawing which makes it look really appealing. It is a paperback book and has normal pages however they are not light ones so it doesn't really look like something that would break. The thing that I don’t like about this travel guide is that it doesn't have a single picture but only drawings. Also it has way too much text and I really want to avoid that.
Cost: This books cost around 80 kr which makes it quite a cheap item considering the dimensions as well as the materials used. Personally I was expecting it to cost much more.
User/Audience: Considering the format of this book this was definitely aimed for adults. It doesn’t contain any eye-catching item which would attract younger people. Also there is way too much test for it to be appealing.Another thing is the material it contains. I took a look at it and discussing it with my dad who has lived in Milan for almost his entire life there are quite many expensive places nothing that young people would go to.This is not going to be helpful for me because my plan was to make something that is appealing to teenagers but can be used by adults as well.
Function: There are tons of things in this book. There are pages about food, shopping as well as monuments and famous things. The bad thing is that they are not split in different categories which makes it really confusing. The good thing is that it has catching title which attract people and make them want to get there. If only there were some pictures it would have been even better.
Size/Content: This travel guide is really weirdly shaped as it is really long but not wide. I feel that it would be really uncomfortable to hold in your hands because of this.
Also it is
particularly long and as I mentioned before there is way too much text when
many more pictures could have been included. As the
title says there are 101 thing that it is advising to do. It does sound good as
a title but not as for the content. It is absolutely too much.
ANALYSIS OF THE SOURCE:
Origin: I would consider this book a primary source because the author is telling her own experience in the city where she was born. As a consequence all the things she says and the judgements she makes are based on something she experienced herself. This makes them also more reliable.
Purpose: the purpose of this books is to promote the city of Milan and every bit of it that is unknown to tourists. The point is not express all the beautiful things that Milan has without necessarily sticking to the classic monuments that tourist visit. However, it is aimed for people who live in Milan as in order to understand it it's required a bit of knowledge about the city. This could be a good thing in order to promote the unknown bits of the city also to people who leave there.
Value: the book was published in 2009. Because the author was not born in Milan but moved there at a very young age and hated it in the beginning it is interesting to get to know also an outsider's opinion of someone who got to know the city from literally nothing.
Limitations: the book doesn't have any pictures which is not too good. Also it aims to a completely different target audience than I do because the point of this book is to get Milanese people to get to know more about their own city when my point is to share my experiences with other people who are actually not interested in visiting Milan.
RELEVANCE TO MY PROJECT:
I will definitely be using this as as a source as this is a great book with tons of interesting things in it. Because my point is to create a travel guide which doesn't only include classic thing to do in Milan but is also focused on new things and alternatives which are fun especially for teenagers, I will use the content of this book as an inspiration. However, I won't be able to create something inspired to its layout because this is not what I want to create; on the other hand I would like to create a proper travel guide which is well organized and not a book to read.
