Finding website for inspiration: "Lonely Planet"

As I mentioned before I am thinking of diving my travel guide in different section. Every section will be aimed for a different kind of person based on their interests. Each one of this section will cover different aspects of Milan and to get an idea of what to include I went on Lonely Planet website and searched for ideas. Here is what I found:
screenshot of Lonely Planet website
Link of Milano section on Lonely Planet website: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/italy/milan

This was definitely a great inspiration and I will think about this categories because I do know that Lonely Planet is known as a pretty good travel guide and might really help me with my project. unluckily I don't own a copy of a guide about Milan by Lonely Planet.

ANALYSIS OF THE SOURCE:
Origin:  I am pretty sure that this website can be edited by anyone who is part of the Lonely Planet organization as a consequence this source was created by many people. It is a collection of many places to go to as a consequence it's a secondary source.
Purpose: this specific page of the website is a collection of places to go to and stay in Milan. The point is to persuade people to make a trip to Milan and get the best out of it by following teh advises that the website is giving out.
Value: I don't have any reason to believe that anything that was written on this website is not true as Lonely Planet is considered to be one of the most reliable travel guides ever. It might be a bit biased as it is a persuasive tool but I believe that all the places listed actually exist as there is a website, address and other information given as well.
Limitations: it is possible to verify the content of this web page by going on the website given as a consequence I can't really think of any important limitations.

Finding website for inspiration: "Hi, we are lovers"

Something that I would like to point out is that my point is to make a travel guide aimed mainly for teenagers and for people who would be uninterested in visiting Milan. However, my point is not to make a travel guide that only lists places to visit and places to eat at on the other hand I really really want to do something interesting. I want to create an "alternative" guide which has, other than the main places, also smaller and unknown place which are even nicer to visit. For instance, I will never advise in my travel guide to go and eat in one of the restaurants on the main square in front of the cathedral; I will then find little places and "osterie" where you can go and eat REAL Italian food without spending as much.

Something that really helped me in the process of investigating places to visit, as well as restaurants and shops to go to, is my dad experience. Because he has always lived in Milan he is really good at advising some places he used to go to and other monuments which are not as famous as the ones that appear in pictures. However, I could not base my whole travel guide on my dad so I researched some websites/ blogs which I couls use as inspiration.

The first on that I found is a blog held by three girls who I guess live in Milan. It's really nice and well structured. They have so many things on the website, some of them also in English. But the important thing is that they talk about alternatives to a normal Milanese lifestyle which is exactly what I am aiming for.

Here is the link to their blog: http://www.wearelovers.it/en/

ANALYSIS OF THE SOURCE:
Origin: I would say this is a primary source because it is written by three girls who live in Milan and share their own experiences with the world through a blog. I haven't read much from the blog yet but I do think that they don't specifically refer to anything which could make this website a secondary source.
Purpose: the purpose of this blog is just sharing experiences. That goes really close to what I would like to do with my travel guide. It is created by three girls who live in Milan and attend university there, I am pretty sure they are all Italian so I would say that they know what they talk about.
Value: the value of the website is just personal. The website was first created as a way to collect personal memories and then it became famous.
Limitations: one of the main limitations that I can identify is that this blog is definitely biased. That doesn't really affect the outcome badly but sometimes thing are not shown as they actually are. For example, they talked about a nice clothes shop however they did not address that it is a really expensive place and that is something that should be done when advising a place to people.

Analysing existing products: Osterie Milanesi

Product #5: “Osterie Milanesi”, Milanese osterie

picture taken by me of my own travel guide
I should, first of all, define what an "osteria" is. In Italian osteria is defined as a restaurant which cooks what you would also cook at home (in an Italian house) for a really decent price. It was born originally to feed the workers who didn't have time to go home for lunch. Nowadays, it became more like a restaurant in most of the cases because the prices increased and the concept of osteria became really popular and cool.
This might look like a really bad old travel guide but it actually isn't. I found it pretty surprising when, looking through it with my dad, I found out that many of the restaurants included in this are really good ones which I have actually been to.
It is not big sized and in the inside is quite well organized but because it's so old some people might not like it. This travel guide kind of cleared up my mind on the layout I would like to give to my own travel guide.

DIFFERENT ASPECTS:

Aesthetics: The general aesthetics of this book is not the best. It looks kind of old and the graphic could be better. However, I need to point out that “Osteria” in Italy is not a proper restaurant but something less elegant and usually cheaper. Definitely not for standard tourists unless they are interested in in. As a consequence I could assume that this kind of layout was chosen by the editor to reflect the concept of “cheap but good”. The inside on the other end is much better. There are pictures for every osteria which is listed and again they are in balck and white because the editor wanted to reflect the same image as I say before. The name of each restaurant is written really big at the top of the page and underneath there is a text box with everything that you need to know about it which is really good in order to get information without reading through the entire description which is included just under the text box.

Cost: This travel guide is so old that the price is still in Italian lira. So I can’t really judge whether the price of this book is appropriate or not.
User/Audience: Because this travel guide is so old and includes restaurants which families would probably go to it is aimed for people who want to eat well but don’t spend too much money on their meal. There is not a specific target audience because anyone would be interested in eating good Italian food and not spending much. When I say anyone I mean both tourists and Italian people.
However, when you are from another country and you take a trip to Milan, especially if it is the first time it is really hard to find good places which are not aimed for tourists and as a consequence really expensive. So the aim of my guide is to suggest places which Milanese people would go to but are still good for foreign people as well. Function: The purpose of this books is to share with people a bunch of great osterie which they could go to. The message is that you don’t need to spend much in order to eat good food and you can do that in places such as the ones listed in this guide. It’s really easy to use because lot of information about each restaurant is included and well organized so that it is easy to find.
Size/Content: This book is really small. It has around 160 pages but because there is more or less a restaurant every two or three pages it definitely has a lot of content.  It has also a good size that could easily be put in a hand bag and also hold. However I do not think that being put in a bag is the aim of this book as the point is to just scroll through it and find a cool place to eat at.

ANALYSIS OF THE SOURCE:
Origin:  this is a secondary source because it is basically a collection of restaurants and osterie. It also provided basic information about the places and it is not based on anyone's personal experiences. It's a really old guide printed in 1995 and as a sequence some restaurants might not even exist any more.
Purpose: the guide was created with the purpose of sharing the pleasure of eating well and healthy  and discover traditional Italian restaurants ( as said in the travel guide itself). I guess that also promotion plays quite a big role in the purpose of which this guide was created.
Value: I have no reason to believe that any of this restaurant has been invented or is not real because basic information about each one of them is provided and also sometimes pictures.
Limitations: the problem with this guide is that it is so old that some of the restaurants in it might not even exist any more. Also the layout reflects the age of this book and I don't think that anyone would by this travel guide any more (expect my parents obviously).

RELEVANCE TO MY PROJECT:
As I mentioned before I am interested in creating a guide which aims for different categories of people. Creating a section for people who are interested in food and wine would be quite good and as a consequence I will have to include traditional places such as osterie. This kind of restaurant also provides a wide choice when it comes to money because they are definitely cheaper than proper restaurants, more traditional and sometimes you even eat better there,

Analysing existing products: Milano low cost

Product #4: “Milano low cost"

picture taken by me of my own travel guide
Out of the travel guides I analysed so far this is definitely my favourite. The structure and the general layout are well organized, there are a few pictures and a lot of "interactive content" which makes the overall impression of the guide much much better. However, the thing I liked the most about this product is how it is focused on a special topic: enjoying the city without spending too much (low cost). This is something that might be useful for my guide as well. It covers a wide range of topics, from restaurants to shops and museums. The size is a great one. It is big enough to be clear but small enough to be kept in an handbag. A bad thing is that it is aimed for mainly people who live in Milan it's not something for tourist; but it could be one, that's the thing I like.
I find that also the cover is very appealing because it reflects a really cool image of Milan that tourists wouldn't think of. I would like to try something like that for my own travel guide when it will come to create it.

DIFFERENT ASPECTS:

Aesthetics: This book has such a pretty cover. There is a tram on it which really reflects an awesome image of the city. There is a big title which everyone would like: “Milano Low Cost”. It really persuade the client to buy it. Again, no pictures in this travel guide either. I think that this is because these travel guides are aimed for people who live in Milan or at least have been there before. As a consequence there is no need of showing them what the city look like. I need to admit though that this guide works without pictures, not like the others. It is well organized and it has little colorful things at the top of each age explaining what the page is about. There are big clear maps and the font is pretty amazing.

Cost: This guide costs around 90 kr. That is a good cost for such a book. Considering that this books sends the message of “low cost” there is now way this could have been an expensive book.
User/Audience: I guess that this book is aimed for families who feel like enjoying themselves in Milan without spending too much. However, considering the places that it talks about it is referring to someone who lives in Milan. As a consequence it is not the best piece of inspiration for me.
Function: The purpose of this travel guide is to promote the image of a low cost city. There is quite a bit of text however I have been reading a bit so I can say that it is not that bad. It’s clear and focused and I would say that almost everything that has been written down is needed.
Size/Content: The pages are quite thick however there are 300 pages so the book is not that thick. It is light and easy to carry, well-shaped and it’s easy to find things in there because of the good structure.
Overall, I would say this is a really good product which is worth buying. The only bad thing is that it is only aimed for people who live in Milan.

ANALYSIS OF THE SOURCE:
Origin:  just like all the other guides I have analysed before this is based on two people's experiences but the information about each one of the places included in the guide makes it a secondary source.
Purpose: the point is to persuade people not to stop enjoying the city they live in just because everything is really expensive. It then lists a bunch of places worth to go to in order to keep enjoying yourself in the city you love. I guess that the intent of this guide could also be considered promotion. Unluckily the audience is, again, Milanese people  not really tourist as they are to really likely to use such a tool.
Value: because the travel guide lists places and provides specific information I do believe it is based on real facts and experiences and as consequence real places. I can prove this by saying that for every place there is a website or a Facebook page provided.
Limitations: material-wise this travel guide is kind of poor. The cover is paperback and we have had this for a couple of years and the corners are already completely ruined.

RELEVANCE TO MY PROJECT:
I do think that it is important to enjoy the place you are visiting as much as possible when you are on a trip. Not spending much, as a matter of fact, could be a way to do more things and as a consequence have more fun. I don't usually go to super expensive place myself when I am in Milan and I think that it is important to provide alternatives to the classical "tourist trap" in my travel guide. I might make a low cost section in my guide as well.

Analysing existing products: Mangiare bene a Milano

Product #3: “Mangiare bene a Milano”, eating well in Milan

picture taken by me of my own travel guide
The general appearance of the travel guide is discrete. It has good size and layout but the inside could be better. Something really good about this books is that it is definitely extremely practical. It is organized as a long list of restaurants. At the top there is the name and right underneath there is all the information that is needed such as address, location and phone number. There is also a brief description and a grade about the restaurant overall. Unluckily no pictures are included and that is something I am really trying to focus on that point when creating my own travel guide; however a little map for every restaurant is located underneath the description. Something this guide really made me think about is whether I want to make a list of restaurant or organize them in some other way. I don't really know yet but I will have to think abut different options and consider the best one.
I would say in conclusion this is quite a good book however I can't consider it a travel guide because it only covers the topic of restaurant and not Milan as a bigger concept.

DIFFERENT ASPECTS:
Aesthetics: This travel guide looks pretty great to me. It has a really simple cover which is perfect for the people who it is aiming to, it is also extremely smooth and nice to hold. It has a style on its own and as I said it looks attractive. It is a paper back cover but that is good enough so that it doesn’t weight too much. It also has nice pockets in the inside so that you can put notes in it. The inside on the other hand is not as good. There is not a single picture and there ar so many maps to show where every restaurant is which are not even clear. It is well organized but the fond is standard and not attractive at all.
Cost: The price of this product is approximately 100 kr. I would say it is worth it because there is a lot of content in it and tons of things. I really think that this is a good price, on the other hand I was expecting it to be more expensive.
User/Audience: I guess this is definitely something aimed for adults. It is nothing more than a list of restaurants you could go to and because there are no picture it wouldn't look attractive to teenagers. Also, teenagers don’t usually decided where the family is going to eat, and if they happen to go out with their friends they would rarely go to a proper restaurant.
Function: It is a product that can definitely be used because it is well structured.  The list of the restaurant is clear and wide. They are split in categories depending what kind of food they serve and which client they usually get. There is quite a bit of text and it is really descriptive however it is needed.
Size/Content: There are 378 pages in this book. It might seem like too much but it’s not something that you need to read. It’s really light and the pages are not that thick so it’s not too thick itself. There is not a single pictures which is really bad according to me but might be ok for the adults who would buy this travel guide.

ANALYSIS OF THE SOURCE:

Origin: I can't really say this is primary source because it is all based on the description of the restaurant including address, phone number and other information which I guess was all taken from the website or from the actual restaurant. However, also opinions are included and were written by journalists at "corriere della sera" one of the two main Italian newspapers which is also the publisher of the book.
Purpose: the poitn fo this books is to share with people, mainly Milanese people, a bunch of good restaurants. This book is quite a big promoting tool especially for smaller unknown restaurant that are still worth to eat at. Because it is written by more than one person and also collects opinion some of them are not really positive but that makes me think they are kind of true.
Value: as I already mentioned this book collects several different opinion which are both positive and negative. That makes me think that they are true and as a consequence this is quite a reliable book. However, obviously opinion and taste of the food served by each one of this restaurants can change person by person so the person who wrote the review might have liked the food and enjoyed the atmosphere but I might don't like it as much.
Limitations: what I said about the value count also as a limitation because you need to go to the restaurant yourself to develop an opinion. Another limitation that could make this travel guide much better is the lack of picture, it would have been much more interesting.

RELEVANCE TO MY PROJECT:

Even though I would like to base my travel guide completely on my own experience I will have to add some particular restaurants and this is a really good book to take them from as it is quite a reliable source as I stated before. Also this product made me think about what I would like to include in my travel guide. The point is that I would really like to make something that would be good for more than just a category of people so I will split my guide in different section and create different paths in Milan based of the interests of the standard person each section is aimed for. For instance, section 1 for people who like sport, section 2 for people who like nature, section 3 for people who like shopping etc,
In this way I will manage to satisfy more than only one range of people with my product.

Analysing existing products: 101 luoghi dove fare shopping a Milano almeno una volta nella vita

Product #2: “101 luoghi dove fare shopping a Milano”, 101 place to do shopping at in Milan

picture taken by me of my own travel guide
I am not 100% happy with this travel guide. Because it is the same editor as the travel guide I already analysed so many things look the. For example, they are both structured as a book which you should read in advance and not the kind of thing you can carry around; also there are no picture and a lot of text. The topic is a good one because shopping in Milan is such a big thing. However it mainly talks about clothes shopping which lead to only one target client: women.
Again, the title sounds very appealing and the cover does as well but I am not the kind of person who would read a book before leaving for holiday and I do not think that many teenagers do. Because I will aim my travel guide to them this won't be such a great source.
In conclusion, also the shops the book talks about are shop for only women which makes it hard for teenagers to approach them first of all because of the clothes they sell and secondly money wise. However, I will still be using this as a source in case I find my self with a lack of shops to go to.

DIFFERENT ASPECTS:

Aesthetics: This cover looks ok. It is purple and includes a girl going shopping which I find nice and obviously relevant to the title. The font is nice and purple is used also in some of the words occasionally to make them look nicer. It is a paperback book and has normal pages however they are not light ones so it doesn't really look like something that would break.  A good thing is that it is really light so that if you need to carry it around it is an extremely good weight. Because it is the same editor as the guide I looked at before, again, there are no picture and I really don’t like this and I will try to avoid this in my product.

Cost: This book costs around 150 kr.I personally think this is way too much for the kind of information it contains. It is aimed for a specific age category and because it is expansive I don’t even think it is that popular.
User/Audience: As the title and the cover suggest this is definitely a books for girls. It lists all the best shopping places in Milan. There are also a couple of shops in the list aimed for men but definitely this travel guide would never be picked up by a man. Also the list includes shops which are mainly for women, as a consequence only women will pick this up and this is not a versatile item.
Function: Again, the same editor of the previous travel guide has published this so it is set in the same way. There is so much text and no one would ever open this and start reading while he or she is around walking in Milan. As a consequence, this is the kind of books which you would read before going on your trip.
Size/Content: The same editor as the previous travel guide made this which means that the shape is the same. It is really weirdly shaped as it is really long but not wide. I feel that it would be really uncomfortable to hold in your hands because of this. Also it is particularly long and as I mentioned before there is way too much text when many more pictures could have been included. As the title says there are 101 thing that it is advising to do. It does sound good as a title but not as for the content. It is absolutely too much.

ANALYSIS OF THE SOURCE:

Origin:  I believe this source cannot be considered either primary or secondary. It is written by someone who does live in Milan and as a consequence could be based on her experience. However, because it is basically a list of shops to go to and also includes address, phone number and how to go there most of the information must be based on what was found on the websites.
Purpose: the book was created by a model who lives in Milan with the obvious purpose of making a list of great shops to go to. The audience this is aimed for is obviously women because the shops are mainly women clothing shops.
Value: this book has quite a big value because, other than personal opinions and judgements about each one of the shops, it also includes detailed information on how to get there, what they sell and which is the standard client of each one of this shop. As a consequence, it is a lot more than just a collection of opinions about shopping in Milan.
Limitations: a limitation, that however only partially affects the final outcome, is the fact that there are no pictures or maps in this travel guide/ book. They could have definitely been really useful tools.

RELEVANCE TO MY PROJECT:

Because the target audience for my project are teenagers what will attract them more than some really good shopping? I just took a quick look at what some of the shops in this book sell but I might be able to use some of them and include them in my travel guide. However , because I would like to aim to teenagers in general I will have to research about non-clothing shops as well.

Analysing existing products: 101 cose da fare a Milano almeno una volta nella vita

Today I finally finished analysing the products I have been collection. In total they are five. They are all travel guides in Italian unluckily mainly aimed for Italian people. As a consequence they are quite a biased source which means I will have to take a look at guides which are also in English and maybe Swedish.

Product #1: “101 cose da fare a Milano almeno una volta nella vita”, 101 things to do in Milan at least once in your life

picture taken by me of my own travel guide
My general thoughts about this guide were somewhere in between positive or negative. It has a really appealing cover which according to me makes people want to buy it and also the title sounds beautiful. However, this is not a proper travel guide as it is structured more as a book. By this I mean that there is a lot of text, no pictures and small titles.
The topics it talks about are a lot and also quite interesting but they are all thing that people who live in Milan would do not tourists, and not knowing anything about Milan is definitely not an advantage because there are pretty straight references to districts and streets which you can't find without a map if you are a tourist (a map is not included in the book).
My conclusion is that this is the kind of book you would read for your own pleasure either if you leave in Milan and are curios about knowing more or if you are the kind of tourist that has been in Milan before and is now interested in discovering new places and new things to do.

DIFFERENT ASPECTS:

AestheticsThe cover is quite appealing: there is a huge title and a really nice drawing which makes it look really appealing. It is a paperback book and has normal pages however they are not light ones so it doesn't really look like something that would break. The thing that I don’t like about this travel guide is that it doesn't have a single picture but only drawings. Also it has way too much text and I really want to avoid that.
Cost: This books cost around 80 kr which makes it quite a cheap item considering the dimensions as well as the materials used. Personally I was expecting it to cost much more.
User/Audience: Considering the format of this book this was definitely aimed for adults. It doesn’t contain any eye-catching item which would attract younger people. Also there is way too much test for it to be appealing.Another thing is the material it contains. I took a look at it and discussing it with my dad who has lived in Milan for almost his entire life there are quite many expensive places nothing that young people would go to.This is not going to be helpful for me because my plan was to make something that is appealing to teenagers but can be used by adults as well.
Function: There are tons of things in this book. There are pages about food, shopping as well as monuments and famous things. The bad thing is that they are not split in different categories which makes it really confusing. The good thing is that it has catching title which attract people and make them want to get there. If only there were some pictures it would have been even better.
Size/Content: This travel guide is really weirdly shaped as it is really long but not wide.

Origin: I would consider this book a primary source because the author is telling her own experience in the city where she was born. As a consequence all the things she says and the judgements she makes are based on something she experienced herself. This makes them also more reliable.
Purpose: the purpose of this books is to promote the city of Milan and every bit of it that is unknown to tourists. The point is not express all the beautiful things that Milan has without necessarily sticking to the classic monuments that tourist visit. However, it is aimed for people who live in Milan as in order to understand it it's required a bit of knowledge about the city. This could be a good thing in order to promote the unknown bits of the city also to people who leave there.
Value: the book was published in 2009. Because the author was not born in Milan but moved there at a very young age and hated it in the beginning it is interesting to get to know also an outsider's opinion of someone who got to know the city from literally nothing.
Limitations: the book doesn't have any pictures which is not too good. Also it aims to a completely different target audience than I do because the point of this book is to get Milanese people to get to know more about their own city when my point is to share my experiences with other people who are actually not interested in visiting Milan.

RELEVANCE TO MY PROJECT:

I will definitely be using this as as a source as this is a great book with tons of interesting things in it. Because my point is to create a travel guide which doesn't only include classic thing to do in Milan but is also focused on new things and alternatives which are fun especially for teenagers, I will use the content of this book as an inspiration. However, I won't be able to create something inspired to its layout because this is not what I want to create; on the other hand I would like to create a proper travel guide which is well organized and not a book to read.

Keep working

In the past couple of days I have been analysing existing product. I am now only missing one of them out of the five Italian travel guides which I have. I also got two travel guides in Swedish and English which unluckily are about Italy in general. I also decided I will take a look at other travel guides about different cities that we have because I can still get a lot of inspiration and ideas even though thy don't talk about the same topic as I am.

Meeting with Anna

On the same day I talked to Anna, the librarian. She researched on the databases she has where I could find different travel guides. She then got for me 3 other travel guides about either Italy or Milan which are other in Swedish or English. This is because I really needed some sources which were slightly less “biased” towards Italy. By this I mean products which are aimed for people who are not Italian and have never lived there. I will pick them up as soon as possible.

Second meeting with my supervisor

Today I talked again with my supervisor. She answered my questions and most importantly we agreed on a global context. We decided that the best thing would be to focus on GLOBALIZATION AND SUSTAINABILITY.  My project really connects to the concept of culture as well as identity. It will be interesting to analyse different cultures because Milan is quite a big city. Also because I would like to aim to different kind of people for instance create something for people who are interested in sports and something else for people for like nature. We also said that it would be really interesting to aim to a specific category of people rather than a really wide one. I will then create a travel guide for teenagers. They don’t necessarily need to be interested in travelling because that is exactly my point: making them interested in something that they would not normally be interested in. In conclusion, we agreed on the size of the product. I will make a travel guide which is around 50 pages and a standard size which is nice to fit in a bag.

I made this Plan so that I could get an idea of what I need to do. I included all the stages that I want to do however in this plan I am missing two things: evaluating my sources and explain the relevance to my project. I will create separated plans for that.

Meeting with my Supervisor

Today I had my first meeting with my supervisor. I started by describing to her all about my project more in depth than I had already done. She then helped me to put things together by giving me ideas on how to fix things that I wasn’t sure about in my project and also answered my questions. I am now ready to start researching.

How I came up with my idea

In the beginning I was really confused about what to do for my personal project. Luckily, as soon as we went on summer holiday I had a brilliant idea. We went to Croatia for a couple of weeks during the summer and because we had never been there before we bought a travel guide so that could help us moving around. However, my parents kept complaining on how bad that books was, how it was really badly organized and nothing interesting was on it. I then decided that it would have been interesting to make such a travel guide but making a great one which people would be happy with. I then decided to make it on my hometown so that I could have lots of interesting things to say.

INTRODUCTION TO MY PROJECT

My project consists in creating a travel guide about the city of Milan. It will be a book containing all the useful information needed to travel around there. It will contain different itineraries for different people, for instance if you are interested in sports I will advise something and if you are interested in history and science I will create an itinerary that goes around different museums. I am also planning to include good restaurants to eat at, nice shops to buy stuff in and cool things to do. My idea is to take all the pictures myself; however, this might not be possible but I’ll try my best to make it work. I am also lucky because in 2015 there will be Expo in Milan which I is great thing to include in my guide. When I will be done with the content of the book I would like to print it and make a proper book out of it so that people could buy. I will make a nice and appealing cover and the purpose of my project is to make a sell able product.

This is one of the pictures that I have taken. It was taken in 2014.
