General notes: ·         Every week (preferably during the weekend) I will spend some times taking everything I created and putting it nicely on Indesign. This process will happen once a week for at least one hour ·         I will spend two weeks in Milan during Christmas break and I will use that time to take pictures and “look around” ·         The printing should take around 15 days so I might have to bring it there before. That means I need to be done earlier ·         I left a “break” during the days around Christmas because I probably won’t do much

Changes in the structure

Earlier this term I structured my guide to be divided in sections. Every section was to have a theme. However, I figured out by now that having such sections would be extremely uncomfortable for the user. For example, if you just visited a place in the Duomo area you don't really want to keep changing chapter in order to find a restaurant in that area. So instead of dividing it into section by the topic I will be creating areas of Milan. Here is a map I used as inspiration:

Here is a new structure of my guide: 

1. The author: information about me
2. General information: this section will include everything you need to know before leaving for Milan. It will be quite basic information.
   - Location (maybe a map as well)
   - Important phone numbers
   - Transportation
   - General information about costs
   - When to go there (best period)
   - Useful links
3. History and Background: this section will be something to read before the trip.
   - Brief history of the city (maybe some kind of timeline as well)
   - Milan today (current situation)
   - Famous people (some names and quotes)
   - Language
   - Dictionary for the perfect tourist
4. Top ten things you can't miss in Milan: the 10 best things included in this guide that you MUST do
5. Areas: each area must include HOTELS, PLACES TO VISIT, RESTAURANTS, SHOPPING

Designs

In order to get an idea of what I would like my travel guide to look like I did a design for three different pages. To keep it simple I used "PicCollage" which is an app for the Ipad aimed for the creation of collages.

This is what the cover will look like. These pictures are not taken by me so I am only using them as a sample for this design. I really like this font and I would like to use it for the final cover too. I will keep it quite simple but catchy at the same time. Hopefully I will manage to take great pictures.






















Just to get an idea of what a page would look like I created the author profile. Every page on the left will have a small text box at the top explaining the content. Every section will have a different colour text box. I probably won't write as much text but  I just used this random text to see what it would look like.

























And here is an example of what a standard page will look like. Again text box at the top left corner but now a different colour because this is a new section. I will organize the General Information section in squares and the pictures will be always on different sides exactly like this design is showing.

Interviewing people and collecting opinions

A couple of days ago I had the chance to "interview" some of the people in my class about my project. I have been asking random questions such as: would you be interested in going to Milan? Why? What would you do? What would you like to do? What do you think about it?
In order to get a fair judgement and to really get an idea of what to include in my guide and how to structure I interviewed both boys and girls but mainly people who had never been in Milan before.
Here is what came out:

• People know really really little about the city
• The main thing that they were interested in was the "Duomo" which is the symbol of Milan. I found that quite disappointing. 
• However, they all knew about Milan being quite a fashion centred city. Some of them were also interested in shopping. 
• Mainly the boys were interested in Italian Football and Football clubs so they were asking about San Siro. 
• They all mentioned eating good Italian food but they did not specify if they would like something more specific to be included. 
• There was not much interest shown for the history. This helped me to decide that I need to find a way to turn the history of the city into something fun! 
• A couple of people specified that if they will ever go to Milan during summer they would definitely go to the lake. 
• Overall they were all thinking about the kind of holiday when you don't do much and just walk around and see if you are interested in something. I don't know if this will be good or bad for my travel guide.
